The 56th Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium was held April 19-24, 2024 in Buffalo, New York. The show, the premier conference for airport snow removal operations, called on two MB airport business experts to share their knowledge at show educational sessions.

Following last year’s acquisition of the Oshkosh Snow and Ice Business, MB has launched an online equipment manual portal for Oshkosh equipment and has fully integrated the processes at MB’s centralized, dedicated parts warehouse in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. MB and Oshkosh equipment owners now profit from an even more efficient and fast provision of parts as well as of a nationwide network of mobile service technicians.

London Luton Airport (LLA) has been able to cut its optimum runway clearance and de-icing time to less than 12 minutes thanks to an upgraded winter maintenance fleet. The super-quick time compares to one hour and 20 minutes in 2011, a time saving of over an hour, because of new equipment and refined methods for runway clearance and de-icing.

The fact that complex machines are nevertheless easy to operate was an important argument that led to the purchase of the CJS fleet at Zurich Airport. Thanks to this, the drivers can concentrate on their work, namely clearing snow, slush and ice, even with a high pulse at two o'clock in the night.

Performing thorough maintenance work is essential in order to ensure operational readiness at all times. It might sound perfectly reasonable and simple, but doing this is becoming increasingly taxing. The more complex the fleet and the more modern the technology, the higher the demands on the staff. And what should you do when maintenance work is pending, but staff are busy with other tasks?

At the Demo Days, Aebi Schmidt presented the latest innovations, developments and solutions in the area of airport, sweeping, municipal technology, winter maintenance and more - online and live during two days. Since Aebi Schmidt introduced its driver assistance system for airport machines around a year ago, it has been tried in practice at multiple locations. These field operations provided valuable insights into the acceptance of such systems among drivers and operational staff. Insights which make a valuable contribution to the continuous improvement of the system. In a nutshell, partially autonomous systems are viable and offer great assistance, but they still rely on people.

In autumn 2020, the Aebi Schmidt Group acquired the Canadian company Equipements Lourds Papineau Inc. (ELP) – an acquisition continuing the consistent implementation of the group’s growth strategy, as ELP is a leading manufacturer of winter operation equipment in Quebec. Now – somewhat later than planned, due to the coronavirus – the sales and service staff of Aebi Schmidt Canada Inc. and ELP are getting to know one another in person during training for the introduction of the Street King 660 to Canada.

INCHEON AIRPORT IN SOUTH KOREA IS GEARING UP FOR THE 2018 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES The “Land of the Morning Calm” is readying itself for the Games, which will be held from 9 to 25 February 2018. Given that passenger traffic spikes during events of this magnitude in particular, it’s an absolute must for any airport of good standing to have snow-free and ice-free runways and taxiways. To ensure absolute safety and punctuality at all times, IIAC (Incheon International Airport Corporation) is adding ten Schmidt TJS 630 jet sweepers to their winter service fleet.

The Schmidt CJS-DI is a compact jet sweeper with an additional mounted spreader/sprayer which can be customised to reflect your needs.

London Stansted Airport, a member of the Manchester Airport Group, has added a new Schmidt combination sweeper to its airside sweeping and scrubbing fleet. Based on a 250 HP Scania chassis and a Schmidt ASC 990 high speed sweeping and scrubbing vehicle, the truck now joins twelve other Schmidt snow removal machines – six jet sweeper tractor units, three runway de-icers, two snow clearing units, one multifunctional sweeper and scrubbing machine – currently in service at London Stansted.

Turkey, a country situated between East and West that could hardly be any more diverse, fascinating and contradictory and turns out to be a true master of different guises: modern metropolises sit alongside traditional mountain villages, white sandy beaches combine with rugged mountain landscapes, scorching hot summers in the south contrast with icy cold winters in the east. And it is in these very regions with an abundance of snow that Schmidt’s compact jet sweepers will be deployed from autumn 2017.

Snow and ice clearance around the clock

David Achermann is on board the ASH Group since 2009, starting off in the area of process and quality management he moved over to take the responsibility for the Asia Pacific area as Area Sales Manager in 2012. Since the 1st of June the native Swiss is in his new office in Beijing, China. The new branch will set the way for further growth of the brands Aebi and Schmidt on the Asian continent.

Boasting a total weight of about 26 tonnes and a length of 16 metres, the TJS-C 630 jet sweeper is not only one of the longest but also one of the heaviest machines by Schmidt. Sending such a vehicle on a journey involves not only organising the transport from A to B, but also observing customs regulations, filing applications with authorities and meeting tight schedules. No transport is like the other, in particular when it comes to overseas transport – as was the case recently in April on the occasion of the “International Aviation Snow Symposium” in Buffalo in the State of New York.

Instead of buying new, Manchester Airport decided to refurbish up to 12 year old Schmidt CJS Compact Jet Sweepers, resulting in an extension of their working life by up to another 10 years. Manchester Airport, the third largest in the UK and the largest outside London, operates a winter maintenance or snow fleet of up to 25 different units, including nine Schmidt CJS, a snow cutter/blower and two Schmidt ASP Airport Sprayers.

Berlin Airport was the first major airport to test whether and how our autonomous technology can be integrated into their specific operational concept. During the winter months, vehicles, equipment and software have been tested intensively and with great commitment. Conclusion: The future also works in Berlin!

On the Stuttgart apron last Wednesday, the Aebi Schmidt Group and Stuttgart Airport GmbH presented what the future of winter maintenance with autonomously operating vehicles and equipment could look like. The system tested at Stuttgart Airport is fully integrated for the first time.

Dublin Airport has further expanded its winter maintenance fleet to be operationally ready to tackle the severest winter conditions as it expands airport operations with the forthcoming addition of its new North Runway.

Dubai Airport handles 250,000 take-offs and landings every year. This corresponds to about 700 aircraft movements per day. This results in several layers of rubber and soot deposits on the wide runways every day, which can significantly impair the safety of flight operations due to the loss of friction. For example, when the runway is wet, aquaplaning occurs and aircraft could slide off the runway. Effective, large-scale and reliable cleaning is therefore essential for smooth flight operations.

Düsseldorf Airport tested the fully electric eSwingo 200⁺ for around a week. Thanks to the positive results, there are now plans to purchase a machine. The airport wrote in its press release: «Electric Mobility is an important element in Düsseldorf Airport’s sustainability strategy.» But a compact sweeper at the airport? We asked the airport managers to explain what role the machine can play in an environment that is generally dominated by large sweepers.

A new era of winter maintenance is beginning for the French Air Force. At French military airports, it was common practice for a long time for the superseded engines from the old Mirage to be used for snow-clearance purposes. These engines from the fighter aircraft were fitted onto a special truck and this was the method used to blow the snow off the runways with a huge blast of hot air. Following an in-depth review of the old fleet, the representatives from the French Air Force decided that the winter maintenance equipment urgently needed to be upgraded to the latest technology.
