The finish line for FIS ski races (World Cup and World Championships) is at the Salastrains ski lift station at an altitude of 2048 meters at the foot of Piz Nair. The Unimog U 218 is used here together with a Schmidt snow plow to clear the parking spaces.
32 year-round employees, under the direction of Jürg Gianola, who has been the road foreman of the St. Moritz community for 32 years, and the workshop master Fabio Valmadre guarantee that the community's 90 kilometers of road network and hiking trails are always in tip-top condition. The slogan "St.Moritz - Top of the World", protected as a quality brand, is also valid here.
Up to 3 tons of snow (artificial or natural, depending on the weather) are brought to the trails per trip. The task is always: evacuation and transport. Another specialty for winter service in St. Moritz is the self-forged ice scraper. It is a 2.30 meter wide beam device with 17 steel tines that is pushed onto the road by the Unimog's rear power lift. This scrapes the ice surfaces as deep as possible and then clears the road with the clearing blade. In addition to Jürg Gianola and fleet manager Fabio Valmadre, another is really happy with the new Unimog: driver Daniele Polinelli. “It's a really great feeling to work with the new Unimog. Easy to drive, extremely clear, powerful when moving off and a high feeling of security, ”is his judgment from daily practice.
In addition to winter service, the vehicle is of course also used in the months when there is no snow. In the warmer seasons, the Unimog U 218 is mainly used as a towing vehicle for trailers and material transport. In addition, the use in road construction and as a special transporter is in demand again and again. The maintenance of green spaces and the cemetery service as well as work on the sewer system, the water supply and the care of sports facilities round off the work spectrum.
